The Nipissing District has very little public support for cultural initiatives in comparison to similar regions across Ontario. As an example, the cities of Thunder Bay and Sudbury both have fairly comprehensive programs to fund seed grants for events, public commissions and organizational operations. Definitely Superior and La Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario are both operating in those cities and both artist-run centres, which is the same type of group as the White Water Gallery in North Bay.
These groups all conduct outreach work for their communities presenting art exhibitions and cultural attractions that would not normally happen in the community without them. The one major difference between these three arts group is the sources of funding that they each receive. La Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario in Sudbury receives $30,000 from the City of Sudbury towards their ongoing operations and Definitely Superior in Thunder Bay receives approximately $58,000 yearly.
